On January 19, 2008, Roy Jones Jr. and Felix "Tito" Trinidad are fighting each other, and breast cancer, at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY.
Roy Jones Jr. and Felix Trinidad are battling each other on January 19 at Madison Square Garden and have promised $50,000 of their respective purses to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world's largest organization of breast cancer survivors and supporters dedicated to the eradication of the disease.
A December 21, 2007 press release issued by Don King productions stated that donating some of each fighter's take from the event was Jones' idea.
Jones, a five time world champion in four separate weight divisions had participated in a walkathon dedicated to the eradication of breast cancer in his hometown of Pensacola, Florida in October and was so moved by the experience that he approached Don King about sharing proceeds from his upcoming fight. King has "...taken the ball and is running with it," according to Jones.
"I'm so happy to be able to help in any way I can to KO cancer," said Jones at a December 6 press conference in Trinidad's home country of Puerto Rico, where the fighters were promoting their upcoming bout. "This is a fight that will never end until we conquer this disease that has taken so much from so many."
Trinidad, himself a former champion, with the added distinction of having defeated three Olympic Gold Medalists--Oscar De La Hoya, Pernell Whitaker, and David Reid--enthusiastically agreed with the idea.
"Roy Jones and I are donating money from our purses and that is a good thing," said Trinidad.
Having heard of the good works being done in this event, Carlos Baba, owner of CaribeVision Station Group, has pledged $1 Million to Komen.
"Like so many others, his (Baba's) family has been impacted by cancer and he wanted to continue his fight against it," said King. "He couldn't have picked a better organization than the good people at Komen for the Cure, and I am sure my friends at Madison Square Garden and HBO (Home Box Office) will be joining in on this magnanimous effort."
The fight, billed, "Bring on the Titans" will be televised by HBO Pay-Per-View on January 19, 2008 at 9:00 pm Eastern Time/6:00 pm Pacific.
Komen for the Cure got its start 25 years ago when Nancy Brinker told terminally ill sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would "do everything in my power to end breast cancer forever." In the time since she began her quest, Brinker has seen her efforts grow into a highly organized campaign with affiliates in 125 cities and communities across the United States and overseas, including branches in Trinidad's home, Puerto Rico, Germany, and Italy.
