Promoter Barry Hearn has announced details of the latest instalment of his Prizefighter concept which will this time involve heavyweights.

The highly successful all-in-one-night tournament will take place on Friday, October 2nd at the iconic boxing venue that is York Hall in Bethnal Green, London. Once again, the event will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

Prizefighter Heavyweights III Competitors

The line up for the latest Prizefighter is without question the strongest, and maybe most illustrious, field of competitors in the competitions history.

Among the entrants in the first round draw are former British and Commonwealth champion Michael Sprott, former British Champions Scott Gammer and Michael Holden, former Irish Amateur Champion Scott Belshaw, and current undefeated up and comers Coleman Barrett and Danny Hughes.

However, the most intriguing names on the card are without a doubt those of current British Champion Danny Williams and his old enemy Audley Harrison.

Audley Harrison and Danny Williams Meet Again

British boxing fans will have fingers crossed that old rivals Danny Williams and Audley Harrison will square off again when the Prizefighter round one draw is made.

Harrison, a former Olympic gold medallist, holds a win over Williams that the latter has never forgotten about, and the pairs dislike for each other has been well documented.

In fact, Williams told Matchroom Sports that there is only one reason he is in the tournament. Williams said, “When I was first asked to be part of this year’s Prizefighter, as British Champion, I wasn’t sure,” He continued, “But when I heard a certain celebrity boxer would be involved I knew I had to be part of it!”

Williams, who famously defeated Mike Tyson, is intent on revenge and the potential of another Harrison – Williams showdown will make this, the eighth Prizefighter, by far the most eagerly anticipated instalment of the tournaments history.

Prizefighter Rules

The rules of this unique tournament are simple and as follows;

  • Eight heavyweight competitors will square off in four quarter finals, two semi finals and a final – all held in one night.
  • Each contest consists of a maxim of 3 x 3 minute rounds where standard boxing rules apply.
  • If there has not been a knockout or stoppage then the winner will be decided by three scoring judges at ringside.
  • The winner receives £32,000 with the runner up getting £16,000. Losing semi finalists receive £8,000 while losing quarter finalists get £4,000. In total, £80,000 is to be paid out - £11,000 more than previous tournaments.

The winner will not just earn a large cheque, more importantly they will receive a huge boost in their career and another shot at success. The previous Prizefighter winners have all gone on to bigger and better things.

Tickets for the night cost £40 (unreserved) and £80 (ringside).
