At a press conference aboard the HMS Belfast in London, Barry Hearn introduced the boxers who will contest the latest of his Prizefighter tournaments.

The eight cruiserweights will be battling in the one night tournament for the top prize of £25,000, and the right to call themselves Prizefighter champion.

The event will take place at Earls Court in London on May 19th.

Prizefighter Concept

The Prizefighter tournament has so far been a hit with boxing fans with most proclaiming it the saviour of British boxing.

The event consists of four quarter finals, two semi finals and a final fought over one gruelling night. Each fight has 3 x 3 minute rounds, which makes for great entertainment - and one very tired winner.

At the press conference to the latest tournament, Barry Hearn described his thoughts on the concept. He said, "Boxing in some ways has lost its way and gone a bit stale. Prizefighter tries to turn the situation around by making it very easy to understand."

"I've not seen a bad Prizefighter fight. I've seen one or two fighters try to nick it and get beaten but never a bad fight."

He continued, "This is basic entertainment boxing. It's a cross between pro boxing, UFC, a little bit of the contender thrown in - it's all action."

Prizefighter Competitors

Past Prizefighter tournaments have seen a mixture of fighters either looking to kick start their careers or invigorate them. All have provided great entertainment, but this one could well be the best yet.

The eight boxers comprising the cruiserweight Prizefghter are Darren Corbett, Terry Dunstan, Dean Francis, John Keaton, Mark Krence, Bruce Scott, Neil Simpson and Mickey Steeds.

The current field of competitors is certainly the most illustrious of any Prizefighter, with everyone previously having either British or Commonwealth title fights to their name. With all but Mickey Steeds well over 30 years old, it is also the most experienced line up of fighters put together for a Prizefighter.

Prizefighter promoter Barry Hearn was equally excited about the line up and, speaking at the press conference, said, "There are a lot of big names in this and I've enjoyed watching these guys careers over the last five, ten and 15 years."

"Each one of these fighters is a main event fighter and the crowd at the Earls Court are going to be entertained. When the bell goes it's going to be carnage because they don't know any other way" he added.

Draw for the Prizefighter Quarter Finals

The draw for the first round of the latest Prizefighter will take place on Thursday 14th of May - leaving the fighters just 5 days to prepare for their first opponents.

The draw will be made at Portsmouth harbour aboard HMS Victory, with all fighters looking for just that - victory, to secure the cheque for £25,000 and possibly kick start their careers to new heights.

Prediction : Mickey Steeds to win the tournament. Being the youngest in the field, his stamina should be better than most and that could help him overcome a tough group of fighters.
